![]() In addition to getting new ammo types, higher tier weapons now to tremendously more damage than lower tier counterparts turning so many fights into a straight up stat check. Even in the legendary weapons there's a ton of overlap between element types, and the introduction of normal and advanced ammo types only clogs this up further. Weapon element types now feel random and often poorly considered. Instead of every weapon having a specific role and purpose, there's an incredibly amount of needless weapon variation, so much so that it clogs up the entire combat system. ![]() Everything had a place and everything mattered.įorbidden West ruins all of this. Even the most dangerous machine in the game became a joke once you knew what to target and how to approach them. Combat against machines had very little to do with your statistics and a lot to do with your knowledge, skill, and ability to use your specific counters against specific weaknesses. There was a razor-sharp focus to the first game's progression. Over the course of the game your statistics didn't improve tremendously, and in place of this the game's upgrade system mostly gave you more abilities and options. Zero Dawn used a very horizontal progression system. I cannot think of a thing I hate about Forbidden West more than this game's loot and progression systems. What do I mean by this? Well, the best I can do is provide some examples. While a surface level appraisal makes these games look nearly identical, the fundamental systems design underneath the two games are so radically and completely different that I can only conclude that the developers of Forbidden West genuinely did not understand what made Zero Dawn so good. This comes as an immense surprise, given that Zero Dawn is to this day my favorite example of an open world game. I have tried very hard to enjoy Forbidden West over the past few days, but I've had to come to the simple realization that I simply do not enjoy this game. Forbidden West is a bloated, clunky mess. *tl dr Zero Dawn is a lean, tightly designed game.
